  8. airport in March, 1960.  After the Supreme Court certified the legality of 
  9. separate facilities for blacks and whites in Plessy v. Ferguson in 1896, this 
  10. principle spread and divided public life throughout the South and beyond, 
  11. until it was reversed by the Court and Congress more than a half-century 
  12. later.
